Blog: Which Skin Peel Is Right for Me?

There are many types of skin peels, each with different ingredients, strengths and properties to address unique skin concerns.

What are Skin Peels?

Skin peels can range from producing very mild exfoliation to deeper peels that remove layers of sun damage and smooth skin considerably. These powerful skin treatmentsuse active ingredients to help exfoliate dull and tired skin cells, treat specific concerns such as pigmentation and help to stimulate collagen. They are very useful as part of your annual skin care routine.

Depending on the peel, ingredients may include:

  • Glycolic Acid
  • Lactic Acid
  • Salicylic Acid
  • TCA (trichloroacetic acid)
  • Kojic Acid
  • Retinoic Acid
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Vitamin C
  • Glutathione

Alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid, help to exfoliate the skin and stimulate collagen production. Glutathione, kojic acid along with Vitamin C, serve to brighten the skin and reduce inflammation. The blend of acids addresses skin concerns like fine lines and wrinkles, acne, hyper-pigmentation and scarring.

A licensed provider applies the peel, and can advise you on the best home skin care routine to suit your particular skin type and needs. Most peels are virtually painless, done quickly in the office, and have easy post care instructions.

How Do Peels Work?

After your in-office treatment, you may think nothing has happened, but especially with deeper peels, soon the magic begins! On around day 3, the outer dull layer of the skin will begin to peel. This continues for another 3-4 days as the new skin underneath is revealed. The transformation is usually complete in around 7 days, and during that time you should not try to peel or pick at the skin in anyway. Avoid heavy exercise and sweating until the peeling is complete.

If you have never had a peel before, we recommend a series of 2-3 peels, four weeks apart to see maximum benefits. After that, you can return for maintenance just a few times a year.

Are Peels Safe?

Peels are safe for most people, but should not be used on sensitive skin or on people with conditions like eczema or rosacea. We can help you determine which peel is right for you.

What Are The Benefits?

With deeper peels, after your peel is complete, you’ll see a completely resurfaced layer of skin. The Derma Peel for example, is a medium depth peel that stimulates collagen which minimizes fine lines and wrinkles and leaves a youthful appearance. Antioxidants penetrate the skin and protect from UVA/UVB sun damage. You’ll notice a reduction of hyper-pigmentation, acne, and scarring. Overall, the results are a drastic improvement in skin tone, evenness, and texture.

Lighter peels may not have obvious flaking or have just minimal flaking involved, however they still produce brighter skin and smoother texture. With these, it may take a series of peels to get to your optimal results.
