Menopause Skin Care: How to Support Your Skin Through Perimenopause, Menopause & Beyond

By Claudia Harpe | October 27, 2026

If you’ve noticed your skin becoming drier, more sensitive, or less firm in your 40s or 50s, hormonal changes may be playing a role. As estrogen levels decline during perimenopause and menopause, changes in collagen production, skin elasticity, and moisture retention can make your usual skincare routine less effective. At Harpe Laser and Wellness, we…

General Frequently Asked Questions

What is a medical spa?

A medical spa offers both traditional skin care services as well as advanced medical aesthetic and wellness services. Skin care by aestheticians such as facials, hydrafacials, chemical peels, dermaplaning, LED and medical grade skin care is very popular and a foundation for healthy skin. Many patients come in monthly as part of their skin care routine and benefit from having an aesthetic professional to assess their skin and help them achieve their skin care goals. Medical aesthetic treatments conducted by licensed medical professionals are non-surgical but results oriented, typically targeting an aesthetic goal a client may have. These medical treatments include neuromodulator injections such as Botox or Dysport to smooth wrinkles, dermal fillers to restore lost volume or balance facial features, biostimulators such as Sculptra or platelet rich plasma to stimulate collagen and naturally restore volume, bio-identical hormone optimization, laser treatments to remove unwanted hair, sunspots or veins, as well as other energy-based rejuvenation treatments such as ultrasound and CO2 treatments. Medical spas are also a great place to align with for medical weight loss as there is a licensed medical professional to oversee the journey as well as treatments such as body contouring and skin tightening to address the side effects that can arise from losing weight.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical treatment that uses a concentrated beam of light to heat and damage hair follicles, eliminating or drastically reducing hair in the area treated. Six to ten treatments are usually needed for full reduction. Because the laser targets the hair follicle and not the surrounding skin, treatments do not have any real downtime. There may be some redness that usually resolves in about an hour, but clients can usually go back to their regular routines.

Is laser or electrolysis better?

Choosing laser or electrolysis depends on your needs. Electrolysis is the only permanent solution to treat white, light gray, light blonde or light red hair. If your hair is white, then electrolysis is your best treatment choice. But electrolysis is slow and more costly, best for small areas. If your hair has some brown pigment in it, and you would like to treat underarms, bikini, legs or your back, you are probably a much better candidate for laser hair removal.

What is electrolysis hair removal?

Electrolysis uses a tiny probe to deliver electrical current and treat each individual follicle, permanently damaging it. It is best suited for small areas, with grey, white, blonde or light red hair. Treatments can be time consuming and painful, but it is considered to be a permanent solution. While electrolysis may be the only solution for these resistant hairs, for most people, laser hair removal is a faster and more cost-effective method to remove unwanted hair.

How does laser hair removal work?

Lasers use a beam of light that targets the color or melanin in hair, heating and damaging the follicle to reduce its hair growth. Each treatment session treats all the actively growing hairs in the area, damaging those follicles. Most people will require 6 to 10 treatments spaced about a month apart, for full hair reduction.  But, after approximately four of these quick sessions, hair is typically already finer and significantly reduced in number.

What is facial hair removal for women?

Approximately 40% of women have unwanted facial hair. Besides shaving, plucking, or waxing there are only a few good options for long term solutions including laser hair removal and electrolysis. In most cases, Laser hair removal is the most effective, quick and cost effective choice. Usually, 8 treatments are needed for full reduction. However, electrolysis can be best for small areas, resistant white or grey hairs. Each follicle is treated with an electrical current, permanently destroying it.

How much is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal can vary in price depending on service location, medical oversight, provider reputation, and technology used. On average, facial laser hair removal can cost 1,000 to 3,000 for 6 - 8 sessions. At Harpe Laser and Wellness in Asheville, 3 small facial areas will add up to $1200 for 8 sessions. Compared to the cost of monthly waxing and cost of razors, laser hair removal is a better option for most in the long run.

What is a dermaplane treatment?

A dermaplane treatment is a non-invasive treatment performed by a skilled provider, that uses a sterile surgical blade to exfoliate dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin, removing all vellus hair and resulting in a smooth, glowing complexion. With no downtime, it removes about 3 weeks of dead skin cells in one treatment and 100% of patients report smoother skin in just one session.

What is manscaping in Asheville?

Manscaping refers to the trimming, grooming or removal of men’s body hair to improve hygiene, comfort or for cosmetic reasons. About 50% of men engage in manscaping. Common areas for trimming or hair removal include the ears, nose, back hair, chest hair and pubic hair. Manscaping, particularly with laser hair removal, can also be a healthy alternative to dealing with folliculitis or ingrown hairs that can become infected.

Searching for laser hair removal near me?

"Laser hair removal near me" is a commonly searched term. More important than location is the expertise, methods used and medical oversight of the medical spa that performs the treatment. Medical spa's performing laser hair removal should have an MD, PA or NP present, a medical consultation should be performed, the laser technician must be experienced and certified, and the type of laser being used researched for effectiveness and safety for your skin type.
